Pattaya Attractions: Sanctuary of Truth

The Sanctuary of Truth was conceived by Khun Lek, a somewhat eccentric billionaire. His original idea was to create an Ancient City to commemorate the stunning architectural history of Thailand. He then began plans for and building of an immense temple-like structure near Pattaya that he called the Sanctuary of Truth.

Khun Lek researched the history of Thailand and surrounding countries prior to having construction begin on the Sanctuary of Truth. The temple is roughly based on traditional Thai architecture. Its extremely detailed wood carvings depicting the four major philosophical and artistic influences in Thailand: Hindu, Khmer, Chinese and Thai, are the focal point of the Sanctuary of Truth.

Sanctuary of Truth - Construction

Visitors often marvel at the fact that this incredible structure was made entirely of wood. A team of over 250 woodcarvers are working on the sanctuary nearly continuously. The work is scheduled to be completed in 2010 yet visitors already marvel at the incredible site and its intricate woodworking.

The building is in cruciform-design and each has a different style. One wing recalls the architecture of the famous Angkor Wat and is adorned with beautiful Chinese motifs. The main entrance's wing is adorned with Thai motifs.

The exterior of the Sanctuary of Truth is nearly complete but because of the wood's exposure to harsh elements repair work is needed and will be a nearly continuous project. Despite not being completed the Sanctuary of Truth receives rave reviews from visitors.

Visiting the Sanctuary of Truth

Visitors can tour the Sanctuary of Truth for a reasonable 500 Baht. Though some consider this to be a rather steep fee when compared to other attractions, others surmise that the fee is to try to keep the numbers of visitors manageable in order to make their visit better and help alleviate pressure on the construction workers.

The Sanctuary of Truth sits atop a rocky point on the coast just to the north of Pattaya. The town it is located in is Naklua. Songtaews can get you to The Sanctuary of Truth with barely any wait. Pattaya 2 Road becomes the primary road in Naklua.

The Sanctuary of Truth is one of the main attractions of Pattaya and visitors should strongly consider a trip to see this modern marvel honoring ancient arts.
