From a sleepy fishing town, to an adult haven for American servicemen during the Vietnam War, Pattaya has a history of tourism that started in the 1950s with local tourism and later International tourism.

In 2005, an estimated 5.5 million visitors came to Pattaya to enjoy its legendary beaches, terrific nightlife, good food and outstanding recreation. Pattaya tourism is strong and the city embraces its visitors.

The Tourist Authority of Thailand (TAT) has an information office located at the junction of Second Road and South Pattaya Road. When in town you can visit the office and learn if there are any specials shows or events in Pattaya during your stay.

Pattaya Tourism - Etiquette & Customs

It is important when visitng Pattaya to make sure you are aware of the local customs and etiquette in order to prevent putting yourself in an embarassing or potentially illegal situation.

Some of the important things to keep in mind include: the age of consent is 15, the age of consent for escorts and prostitutes is 18, ID cards are needed showing proper age. Some bars charge a fee if their "bar girls" leave with a patron, this is called a "bar fine".

It is never acceptable to touch a monk and dressing appropriately is important if visiting a temple. Rudeness is generally not accepted and the Thai people are very gracious and accommodating.

Pattaya Tourism - What to Do

The options in Pattaya are nearly endless. Tourists can enjoy a wide array of daytime and evening activities. Daytime activities including visiting the amusement parks, themed parks and historic sites in and around Pattaya keep visitors happy. The beaches, water sports and shopping also help visitors feel their days.

The nightlife in Pattaya includes many types of bars, clubs and terrific restaurants. Nightclubs and bars are both open-air and air-conditioned to suit virtually any tastes. Pattaya is tolerant of alternative lifestyles so it is not uncommon to see bikers, gays, lesbians and people from different cultures and backgrounds visiting Pattaya and enjoying all it has to offer.
